Types of Dysgraphia

Hyperlexia

The Three Types of Hyperlexiaing
Type 1: Occurs in otherwise neurotypical, bright children. They simply learn to read exceptionally early. As they grow and their peers catch up, this advanced gap lessens over time.
Type 2: Occurs in autistic children. Alongside hyperlexia, these children display characteristic autistic traits such as sensory processing differences, rigidity with routine and difficulty with social interactions.
Type 3: Occurs alongside delayed verbal language development but the child is not autistic. The reading ability is a splinter skill and like Type 1, the reading gap usually fades as the child gets older.
Why the Link to Autism?
Hyperlexia is considered one of the early "red flags" for autism. While only about 6% to 14% of autistic individuals have hyperlexia, up to 84% of hyperlexic children fall on the autism spectrum.
