Sensory Differences

Sensory processing differences are a core diagnostic feature of autism, affecting an estimated 90% of autistic individuals. These differences occur because the autistic brain filters, organises and interprets neurological information from the environment and the body differently than a neurotypical brain. Rather than being a fixed set of traits, an autistic individual's sensory profile is typically mixed and unique. Responses can fluctuate significantly based on stress, fatigue and the surrounding environment.
The Three Main Sensory Profiles
Hypersensitivity (Over-responsiveness)
The brain registers everyday sensory data too intensely. This often leads to sensory avoidance, where a person actively retreats from environments with bright lights, loud noises or strong smells to prevent physical pain and anxiety.

Hyposensitivity (Under-responsiveness)
The brain registers sensory signals delays, partially or not at all. An individual might have an incredibly high pain threshold or fail to notice extreme temperatures.

Sensory Seeking
To compensate for under-responsiveness or to find comfort, individuals actively look for intense sensory inputs. This often manifests as rhythmic movements, touching specific textures or listening to loud music.

How Differences Manifest Across All 8 Senses
While most people think of the five external senses, sensory processing actually encompasses eight distinct systems.
Sight (Visual)

Hypersensitivity
Intense aversion to fluorescent lights, LEDs, or bright sunlight. Some experience objects or text "jumping around" in visually busy rooms.

Hyposensitivity / Seeking
Fascination with spinning objects, moving water, mirrors or bright, saturated colours.
Hearing (Auditory)

Hypersensitivity
Inability to filter background noise, making crowded rooms or supermarkets overwhelming*. Certain pitches (like sirens or fluorescent bulb hums) can cause actual physical pain.

Hyposensitivity / Seeking
Intentionally making loud noises, placing speakers directly against the ear or thriving in high-vibration music settings.

Touch (Tactile)

Hypersensitivity
Severe discomfort from clothing tags, seams or specific fabrics. Light touch or unexpected physical contact can feel abrasive or painful.

Hyposensitivity / Seeking
A strong preference for deep pressure, tight clothing, rough-and-tumble play and constantly handling textured items.
Taste (Gustatory) & Smell (Olfactory)

Hypersensitivity
Strong flavours, mixed food textures (e.g., smooth and crunchy together) or standard cleaning chemicals feel totally overpowering and nauseating. This is a primary driver behind restricted diets.

Hyposensitivity / Seeking
Excessively smelling objects or people or preferring extremely spicy, sour or intensely flavoured foods.
Vestibular (Balance & Movement)

Hypersensitivity
Fear of being off the ground, motion sickness or intense distress when using swings, slides or elevators.

Hyposensitivity / Seeking
A constant need to rock, spin, pace or swing to feel physically regulated and balanced.
Proprioception (Body Awareness)

Hypersensitivity
Rare, but can cause a hyper-awareness of limb positioning, leading to rigid body movements.

Hyposensitivity / Seeking
Poor spatial awareness, frequently bumping into furniture, stamping feet while walking or standing too close to others because the brain needs hard physical feedback to know where the body is.
Interoception (Internal Body Cues)

Hypersensitivity
Heightened awareness of internal organs, such as feeling a heartbeat intensely which can spike anxiety.

Hyposensitivity / Seeking
Difficulty recognising internal biological states like hunger, thirst, full bladder cues or illness. An individual might completely forget to eat until they suddenly feel faint.
Impact: Overload - Meltdowns and Shutdowns
When an environment provides more data than an autistic brain can process, it leads to sensory overload. If the individual cannot escape the environment or use coping mechanisms, their nervous system treats the overload as a literal physical threat. This triggers one of two survival states:
MELTDOWN

An externalised fight-or-flight response where the individual may cry, scream, lash out or attempt to flee the environment.
SHUTDOWN

An internalised survival mechanism where the individual appears quiet, unresponsive, stone-faced or entirely spent because their brain has muted external inputs to preserve energy.
MASKING

Many autistic individuals, especially adults, forcefully suppress their sensory distress to fit into neurotypical spaces. This chronic suppression is a leading cause of profound exhaustion and autistic burnout.
Management and Environmental Adjustments
While sensory differences are lifelong, environments can be altered to make them accessible and comfortable.
Reducing Input
Utilise noise-cancelling headphones, wear sunglasses indoors, dim fluorescent lights and set up clear visual boundaries or partitions.

Proactive Recovery
Establish quiet zones to take breaks before overload peaks and rely on predictable, structured daily routines to lower cognitive load.
