Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a term used to describe the permanent, lifelong neurodevelopmental and physical impairments that can occur in an individual who was exposed to alcohol before birth. It represents a wide range of mild-to-severe symptoms caused by maternal alcohol consumption crossing the placenta, which disrupts the normal development of the fetus's brain and critical organs.
Categories of FASD

Prevention and Diagnosis
There is no known safe amount, type or timing of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. A developing fetus lacks a mature liver to process and break down toxins, meaning blood alcohol concentrations match maternal levels and can cycle through the amniotic fluid. The brain develops throughout the entire gestational period, FASD is 100% preventable by completely avoiding alcohol while pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
Diagnosing FASD can be challenging as there is no single medical test or blood panel. Specialist medical teams evaluate confirmed or highly suspected history of prenatal alcohol exposure alongside neurodevelopmental and physical assessments. While FASD cannot be cured, early multidisciplinary support, personalised educational interventions and clear daily structural routines can significantly help individuals manage symptoms and thrive.
