Autism

Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a lifelong neurological and developmental difference in how the brain processes the world. It affects how a person communicates, interacts socially, and experiences sensory information, persisting from early childhood throughout their life.

Because it is a "spectrum," no two autistic individuals are exactly alike. Some require significant daily assistance, while others live and work independently.

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that directly interferes with daily functioning or development. It is fundamentally a brain-based condition linked to executive dysfunction, affecting a person's ability to self-regulate, manage time, and control focus. While symptoms typically emerge in early childhood before the age of 12, the condition often persists across the lifespan into adulthood.

AuDHD

AuDHD is a community-coined, non-clinical term used to describe individuals who are both autistic and have Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). While it is not an official diagnostic code in medical manuals, it represents a widely recognized clinical co-occurrence. Studies estimate that between 30% and 80% of autistic individuals also meet the criteria for ADHD and 20% to 50% of people with ADHD have elevated autistic traits.

Specific Learning Differences (SpLDs)

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a common, lifelong neurological learning difference that primarily impacts an individual's ability to process written and spoken language, affecting reading, writing and spelling. It is a neurodevelopmental condition, meaning the brain is structured differently to process information. It is completely unrelated to intelligence, laziness or visual impairments.

Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia is a lifelong learning disability that severely impairs a person’s ability to understand numbers, learn mathematical concepts, and perform arithmetic operations. It is often informally described as "maths dyslexia". However, it is a completely distinct neurodevelopmental condition that affects roughly 3% to 7% of the population, impacting individuals regardless of their gender, education level, or general intelligence.

Dysgraphia

Specifically impacts writing mechanics, leading to difficulties with handwriting, spelling and organising thoughts on paper.

Hyperlexia

Hyperlexia is a learning profile characterized by a child's precocious ability to read words well above their expected age, which drastically outpaces their verbal language comprehension and social skills. Often present as a "splinter skill," it is frequently associated with the autism spectrum.

Physical & Motor Coordination Variations

Dyspraxia

Also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), it impacts gross and fine motor skills, balance, and spatial orientation. It does not impact cognitive capacity.

Neurological & Tic Variations

Tourettes and Tic disorders

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is the most complex type of tic disorder, a category of neurodevelopmental conditions characterised by involuntary, repetitive movements and vocalizations called tics. Tics usually begin in early childhood, typically around ages 3 to 9, peak in severity during early adolescence (ages 10 to 12) and significantly decline or completely resolve for the majority of people by early adulthood.

Developmental Language Disorder

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that makes it difficult to understand and use spoken language. It is a very common but often "hidden" disability, affecting approximately 7% of children (about 2 children in every classroom of 30).

A diagnosis is typically made by a Speech and Language Therapist after the age of 5 if the difficulties have a significant impact on everyday life and are not caused by another condition.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures caused by sudden bursts of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It is one of the most common neurological conditions worldwide, affecting approximately 50 million people of all ages. While it cannot currently be cured, the condition can be managed effectively with proper treatment in up to 70% of cases.

Synesthesia

Synesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon where the stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway automatically and involuntarily triggers an experience in another pathway. For example, a synesthete might hear a specific musical note and simultaneously see a distinct color or taste a word whenever they read it.

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong, brain-based condition caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. When a mother drinks alcohol, it passes through the placenta to the baby, whose underdeveloped body cannot process it. There is no known safe amount of alcohol to consume during pregnancy.

FASD is a spectrum, meaning no two individuals are affected in the exact same way or to the same degree. The effects are permanent and can range from mild to severe, impacting multiple areas of a person's life.

Intellectual Disability

An intellectual disability is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition characterized by significant limitations in both mental functioning and adaptive everyday life skills. It originates during the developmental period before adulthood. With the right support systems, individuals with intellectual disabilities can learn new skills, achieve personal goals, and live highly fulfilling lives.
